Is Gas a Sign of Pregnancy?

Gas and Pregnancy

Gas or flatulence can be very embarrassing if you can’t predict that it’s coming! Gas during pregnancy is very common. This is because the increase in the hormones in your body relaxes the muscles of the digestive tract and our gastrointestinal system has to work much harder and takes more time. This leads to fermentation of undigested food and this causes us to pass gas (often foul – smelling), very often. Some women also become constipated and suffer from abdominal pain also. Though research has shown that women tend to pass more gas during the early stages of pregnancy, but gas alone is not a sign of pregnancy. Passing lot of gas may be a sign of an upset stomach. If you have been trying to conceive and are passing lot of gas, you would need to look out for the some more symptoms, in order to confirm your pregnancy. The early symptoms of pregnancy include:

  • Missed Periods
  • Tenderness of Breasts
  • Implantation Bleeding
  • Fatigue and Tiredness
  • Mood Swings
  • Pain in lower abdomen
  • Morning Sickness
  • Food cravings
  • Frequent Urination

If you are experiencing some or all of the above symptoms along with gas, then you can take a home pregnancy test. On getting a positive result, you may consult your medical practitioner for further tests to confirm the pregnancy.
