Diabetes During Pregnancy

Diabetes during pregnancyDiabetes in pregnancy is not as big a problem as it used to be a few years ago, but it continues to be a common pregnancy complication that many women suffer from. With proper medical care combined with a nutritious and healthy diet, many women are successfully going throughout their pregnancy while being diabetic.

Diabetes is a condition when you have a lack of insulin, which is important for breaking down sugar and transporting it to the cells in your blood.

Symptoms and Signs of Diabetes

Pregnancy is well know for it's tendency to reveal women who may be susceptible to diabetes and women who suffer with high blood sugar levels during pregnancy are more likely to develop diabetes later on in life. Some of the common symptoms of diabetes include:

More frequent urination
Blurred vision
Weight loss
Dizziness
Increased hunger

Controlling Diabetes during Pregnancy

Should you be suffering from diabetes during your pregnancy you will bear the risk of giving birth to a large baby, which may increase your chances of having a cesarean section. Diabetes will also increase your chances of pre-eclampsia, and increase the chances of your baby getting hypoglycemia and jaundice.

The primary ways of controlling diabetes during pregnancy is to never skip any meals, exercise on a regular basis and to adjust the amount of insulin you take in accordance with your healthcare provider's directions.

Your healthcare provider may also suggest having ongoing blood tests during your pregnancy to monitor your blood sugar levels.
